Etymology
June 5, 2010My name is a flower.
I haven’t learned about it until I went to college and took Plant Taxonomy class as my elective on my junior year in Biology. I haven’t seen one in actual until after I graduated and went to visit New York with my sister. But I sure have seen it first on TV when I was ten. The Hanson brothers used it as a background for their Mmmbop music video.
According to my mother, it was my father who gave me my name. She said he got it from her first name. My mother has thought of a different name for me. If she had given me the name, I wouldn’t bother convincing my sister that my name is also a flower. Because I would be the name of a country and that would be a different story.
But it’s not the case. I was named by my father. I was named after my mother. And my mother’s name is much more familiar with people. So I have to settle with my name being a musical instrument.
Still I want everyone to know that my name is also a flower.
